Putrada Ekadashi is known as the Ekadashi that blesses the family with children and protects the next generation. Observed twice a year in the Pausha and Shravan months, it is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and especially loved by couples praying for progeny and family peace.
“Putrada” means “giver of children,” but spiritually it also points to a healed lineage, protection for existing children, and the grace to fulfil one’s responsibilities as a parent in a dharmic way.
On Dashami, keep food and mind light. Eat only satvik meals before sunset, avoiding onion, garlic, meat, alcohol and heavy, tamasic foods.
Decide your fasting level in advance:
Wake up during Brahma Muhurta if possible, bathe, wear clean light-coloured clothes and sit facing east at your altar.
Take a clear sankalpa, stating your name, place and intention, for righteous children, protection of your current children, or healing of your vansh and offer it at the feet of Lord Vishnu.
Avoid all grains and beans throughout Ekadashi. Keep your speech gentle, your thoughts clean and your actions non-violent and compassionate.
Fill the day with japa, kirtan, reading Vishnu-related scriptures like Bhagavad Gita or Vishnu Sahasranama, and quiet charity or seva.
Calm the mind, visualise Lord Vishnu on Sheshnag, and invite Him into the image with heartfelt prayer.
Offer water, sandal paste, flowers, Tulsi, incense, lamp and naivedya as per your capacity, focusing on gratitude rather than perfection.
After japa, fold your hands and speak directly to the Lord in simple words. Ask for healthy, satvik children, protection and guidance for your existing children, and the removal of karmic blocks and fears connected to your family line.
Offer your worries into His hands, and consciously replace them with trust.
End with a small aarti, circling the lamp before the Lord.
Walk around the altar 3 or 11 times, softly chanting the Lord’s name and resting in the feeling of surrender (sharanagati).
Exact tithi and parana times change by year and location, so always follow a reliable local Panchang or your temple’s announcement.
Observe the vrat as a team: even if only one partner can fast strictly, both can participate fully in puja, mantra and charity.
Instead of focusing only on “getting a child,” hold a sankalpa for becoming parents who can raise a child in Dharma, love and emotional stability.
Let children light the lamp, offer flowers or chant simple names like “Om Namo Narayanaya.”
Tell them the Putrada Ekadashi story in a gentle way – a king who prayed for a child and was blessed – and connect it to gratitude and responsibility for the family they already have.
Observing this Ekadashi with faith is said to remove obstacles in conceiving and bless the family with satvik, healthy offspring.
The vrat is also considered a powerful prayaschitta for past karmas related to family, parenting, or neglect of duties towards children and ancestors.
It aligns the home with the sustaining energy of Lord Narayana, bringing peace, emotional healing, and protection to the next generation.
Prepare your heart and home for Putrada Ekadashi. Follow this simple guide, keep your sankalpa pure, and let Lord Vishnu’s blessings flow through you to the next generation.
