Day 6|October 16, 2026
Goddess Katyayani
Goddess Katyayani
The sixth day of Navratri introduces the fierce, martial, and supremely radiant form of Goddess Katyayani. She is the ultimate warrior Goddess, born specifically to destroy the demonic forces that threatened the cosmos. Despite her fearsome purpose, she is deeply compassionate to her devotees. Worshipping her on Day 6 washes away all accumulated sins, drives out negative energies, and is universally known as the most powerful remedy for removing obstacles in marriage and relationships.
A Famous Tale of the Goddess
Long ago, a great sage named Sage Katyayan performed years of severe, grueling penance. His one ultimate desire was for the Supreme Mother Goddess to be born as his own daughter.
During this same era, the buffalo-demon Mahishasura had acquired terrifying boons, making him invincible to any man or god. He drove the deities out of heaven and plunged the universe into chaos. Realizing that only a supreme feminine energy could defeat him, the holy Trinity—Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva—merged their divine cosmic energies together.
From this blinding light, a magnificent Goddess materialized. Because she manifested in the hermitage of Sage Katyayan, and because he was the very first to worship her, she became known as Katyayani—the daughter of Katyayan. Endowed with the weapons of all the gods, she marched into battle and ultimately slayed Mahishasura, restoring peace to the universe.
Iconography & Symbolism
Goddess Katyayani is a spectacular vision of divine wrath and protective grace.
The Mount (Vahana)
She rides a magnificent and terrifying Lion, symbolizing her supreme majesty, courage, and readiness to destroy evil.
The Four Arms
She possesses four arms that perfectly balance destruction and blessings.
The Weapons
In her top left hand, she holds a pristine Lotus flower. In her bottom left hand, she holds a gleaming sword named Chandrahasa, symbolizing the severing of ignorance and ego.
The Protective Mudras
Her right hands are formed in the Abhaya Mudra (dispelling fear) and the Varada Mudra (granting boons), reassuring her devotees that they are completely protected.
Astrological & Chakra Connections
Ruling Planet: Jupiter (Brihaspati).
Goddess Katyayani governs Jupiter, the planet of wisdom, fortune, and marriage. Worshipping her is considered the ultimate astrological remedy for individuals facing delays in marriage or seeking harmony in their marital life (Brihaspati Dosha).
Chakra Connection: Ajna (Third Eye Chakra).
On the sixth day, the spiritual energy rises to the Ajna Chakra, located between the eyebrows. Meditating on this chakra awakens profound intuition, psychic vision, and the ability to see through the illusions of the material world.
How to Do the Puja
Auspicious Color of the Day
Green (Because Day 6 falls on a Friday in 2026, wearing Green aligns with the vibrant, life-giving, and victorious energy of the Goddess).
Favorite Flower
Red Roses or Marigolds.
Special Bhog (Offering)
Honey (Shahad). Offering pure honey to Goddess Katyayani is believed to make the devotee's life sweet, enhance their personal aura/attraction, and grant them immense beauty and peace.
Step-by-Step Ritual:
Take an early bath and wear vibrant green clothing.
Purify the altar area and light the Akhand Jyoti.
Offer red roses or marigolds to the idol or image of the Goddess.
Offer the special Bhog of pure honey in a small vessel.
Sit with your spine straight, focus your attention on your “Third Eye” (the space between your eyebrows), and chant her mantras to awaken your inner warrior.
Perform the Aarti to conclude the ritual.
Special Milestones: The Awakening of the Warrior Spirit
Day 6 represents a major psychological shift in the Navratri journey. The peaceful, nurturing energies of the earlier days now transition into active, martial energy. As the Khetri (barley) continues to grow tall, the devotee is encouraged to mentally confront their own “Mahishasura”—their internal demons of laziness, ego, toxic habits, or fear. The energy of Katyayani provides the absolute courage needed to finally cut these negativities out of one's life.
Sacred Mantras
Om Devi Katyayanyai Namah
(ॐ देवी कात्यायन्यै नमः)
(Chant this 108 times to remove obstacles and invoke courage).
The Chant (Japa)
Chandrahasojjvalakara Shardulavaravahana | Katyayani Shubham Dadyad Devi Danavaghatini ||
