Day 4|October 14, 2026
Goddess Kushmanda
Goddess Kushmanda
The fourth day of Navratri is dedicated to Goddess Kushmanda, the radiant creator of the universe. Her name is beautifully divided into three parts: Ku (a little), Ushma (warmth or cosmic energy), and Anda (the cosmic egg). Worshipping her brings immense vitality, health, and wealth. She is the ultimate source of light and life force, and invoking her on Day 4 removes all ailments and sorrow, filling the devotee's life with radiant divine energy.
A Famous Tale of the Goddess
According to the Hindu scriptures, before the dawn of time, there was only a boundless, dark void. There was no universe, no light, and no life. In the midst of this absolute darkness, a divine light emerged. This light took the form of Goddess Kushmanda.
With a mere, gentle smile, she radiated a tiny fraction of her cosmic warmth (Ushma), which created the cosmic egg (Anda). From this egg, the entire universe—the galaxies, the planets, and the stars—was born. Because she is the ultimate source of all light, she is the only entity with the power and resilience to reside directly in the core of the Sun (Surya Loka). It is her boundless energy that gives the Sun its luminosity. She then created the supreme trinity: Brahma (the creator), Vishnu (the preserver), and Shiva (the destroyer), as well as the supreme goddesses Saraswati, Lakshmi, and Kali, bringing order to the cosmos.
Iconography & Symbolism
Goddess Kushmanda radiates the blinding, golden light of a million suns.
The Mount (Vahana)
She rides a fearless Lioness, representing unmatched dharma, valor, and strength.
The Eight Arms
She is known as Ashtabhuja Devi (the eight-armed goddess).
The Divine Weapons & Tools
In seven of her hands, she holds a Kamandalu (water pot), bow, arrow, lotus, a pot containing cosmic nectar (Amrit Kalash), a mace, and a Chakra.
The Rosary of Siddhis
Her eighth hand holds a sacred Japamala (rosary), which is said to contain and grant all the Siddhis (supernatural powers) and Nidhis (supreme wealth) to her devotees.
Astrological & Chakra Connections
Ruling Planet: The Sun (Surya).
Goddess Kushmanda provides direction, light, and energy to the Sun itself. Worshipping her acts as a powerful astrological remedy to clear Surya Dosha, bringing fame, respect in society, vitality, and curing chronic physical ailments.
Chakra Connection: Anahata (Heart Chakra).
On Day 4, the spiritual focus rises to the Anahata Chakra, located in the center of the chest. Meditating on this chakra opens the devotee to unconditional love, deep compassion, and absolute cosmic harmony.
How to Do the Puja
Auspicious Color of the Day
Royal Blue (Because Day 4 falls on a Wednesday in 2026, wearing Royal Blue invokes deep tranquility, elegance, and vast cosmic awareness).
Favorite Flower
Red Hibiscus or Jasmine.
Special Bhog (Offering)
Malpua (a traditional sweet Indian pancake). Offering Malpua to Goddess Kushmanda is believed to improve the devotee's intellect, decision-making abilities, and brings peace to the household.
Step-by-Step Ritual:
Bathe early and wear Royal Blue attire.
Cleanse the altar area and light the Akhand Jyoti (ghee lamp).
Offer fresh water, sandalwood paste, and red hibiscus flowers to her idol or image.
Offer the special Bhog of Malpua (or any sweet made of wheat and jaggery if Malpua is unavailable).
Sit with a straight spine, focus your awareness on your heart center, and chant her sacred mantras.
Perform the Aarti to conclude the daily worship.
Special Milestones: The Radiance of the Home
By the fourth day, the intense spiritual discipline of the Navratri fast begins to physically manifest as a “glow” or lightness in the devotee. Just as Goddess Kushmanda fills the dark void with her radiant smile, the continuous chanting and burning of incense begin to completely clear away any stagnant or negative energy from the home. The Khetri (barley grass) will now have grown significantly, symbolizing the flourishing of the Goddess's life-giving energy within your walls.
