Day 3|October 13, 2026
Goddess Chandraghanta
Goddess Chandraghanta
The third day of Navratri introduces the fierce yet profoundly compassionate form of Goddess Chandraghanta. Her name is derived from the half-moon (Chandra) shaped like a bell (Ghanta) adorned on her forehead. Unlike the serene Goddess Brahmacharini of Day 2, Chandraghanta represents a shift into readiness for battle. She is the ultimate protector. Worshipping her blesses devotees with immense bravery, fearlessness, and the supreme courage to fight inner demons and external injustices, all while maintaining inner grace.
A Famous Tale of the Goddess
The legend of Chandraghanta takes place on the day Goddess Parvati was finally meant to marry Lord Shiva. Shiva, being an unconventional ascetic, arrived at the palace of Parvati's parents with a terrifying Baraat (wedding procession) consisting of ghosts, aghoris, goblins, and ghouls. Seeing this fearsome sight, Parvati's mother fainted in absolute terror.
To protect her family from shock and to match Shiva's formidable energy, Parvati transformed herself into the awe-inspiring Chandraghanta. In this majestic and fierce form, she approached Lord Shiva and gently pleaded with him to take on a more noble appearance for the sake of her family. Moved by her devotion and power, Shiva transformed into Chandrashekhar—a breathtakingly handsome prince covered in jewels. The marriage was then completed in great joy and cosmic harmony.
Iconography & Symbolism
Goddess Chandraghanta is a striking vision of divine martial energy, always ready for war to protect her devotees.
The Mount (Vahana)
She rides a ferocious Tigress (or Lion), symbolizing absolute bravery, dominance over fear, and the aggressive defense of righteousness (Dharma).
The Ten Arms
She possesses ten arms, out of which eight hold powerful weapons (including a trident, mace, bow, arrow, sword, and lotus). Her remaining two hands are held in the Abhaya Mudra (dispelling fear) and Varada Mudra (granting boons).
The Bell-Shaped Moon
The crescent moon on her forehead is shaped like a temple bell. It is believed that the terrifying sound of this cosmic bell paralyzes demons and negative energies the moment they try to approach her devotees.
The Third Eye
Her third eye is fully open, signifying absolute awareness and the destruction of ignorance.
Astrological & Chakra Connections
Ruling Planet: Venus (Shukra)
Goddess Chandraghanta governs the planet Venus. Worshipping her brings harmony, wealth, and profound joy, serving as an astrological remedy for any Shukra Dosha that causes unrest or lack of prosperity in a devotee's life.
Chakra Connection: Manipura (Solar Plexus/Navel Chakra)
On Day 3, meditation is focused on the Manipura Chakra, located at the navel. Awakening this energy center grants leadership, personal power, high self-esteem, and the physical vitality required to navigate the challenges of the material world.
How to Do the Puja
Auspicious Color of the Day
Red (Day 3 falls on a Tuesday in 2026. Wearing red invokes passion, vigor, and the fierce, protective energy of the Goddess).

Step-by-Step Ritual:
Bathe early and wear bright red clothing.
Purify the altar space with Gangajal (holy water).
Bathe the idol of the Goddess symbolically, offering the red lotus or rose flowers.
Offer sandalwood paste, kumkum, and the Bhog of milk-based sweets.
Light the camphor or ghee lamp, ring the puja bell (to invoke the protective sound of her Ghanta), and perform the Aarti.
Special Milestones: The Shift in Energy
While Day 1 and 2 were about establishing grounding and discipline, Day 3 marks a tangible shift in the household's spiritual energy. As the Khetri (barley) by your Kalash begins to show distinct green shoots today, it mirrors the awakening of the Goddess's active, protective energy (Shakti) entering the home. Devotees should ensure the Akhand Jyoti (the continuous lamp) is shielded from drafts, reflecting the vigilant protection Goddess Chandraghanta offers.
